What have you been doing?

QI got an e-mail claiming that I have been doing illegal activities the past six months. When I went to open it, Windows would not allow it. It said the attachment was harmful to my computer. Is this some new scam or virus that you are aware of? Naturally, it has me very concerned. I have never committed anything illegal by way of downloading or pirating! Any help from you would be a life-saver!

AThis came from Ron in Mesa, AZ. Honestly, Ron, what have you been up to?

Actually, this is spam. It is supposedly sent from the victim's Internet service provider. It purports to show that he has been downloading copyrighted material illegally.

This is one more reason to never look at spam.

Trend Micro snagged a copy of this message in August. The subject line is, "Your Internet access is going to get suspended."

The body says, "The Internet Service Provider Consorcium (sic) was made to protect the rights of software authors, artists. We conduct regular wiretapping on our networks, to monitor criminal acts.

"We are aware of your illegal activities on the Internet…

"You can check the report of your activities in the past 6 months that we have attached. We strongly advise you to stop your activities regarding the illegal downloading of copyrighted material or your Internet access will be suspended.

"Sincerely

"ISC monitoring team"

You can view the spam on Trend Micro's site.

ISPs recently agreed to warn account holders in cases of suspected piracy. This spam may be attempting to play off of that.

Trend Micro did not say what was in the attachment. But I would bet that it is malware. By refusing to open the attachment, Windows saved you from an attack.

At any rate, Ron, you don't have to worry about this. And you can save yourself future sleepless nights. Just delete spam without reading it.
