Editing and burning AVCHD video

QMy wife and I recently had our first child. With a baby, having a camcorder is a must. I bought a camcorder that records in AVCHD format. I can't figure out how to burn videos to a DVD (not Blu-ray Disc). I need it to play in a standard DVD player. I need to send them off to family. Please help before the grandmothers kill me!

AYou never want to anger the grandmothers. They may look sweet. But don't think they won't take a swing at you. We better get this worked out fast!

AVCHD is a format for HD camcorders. It's a tricky format to work with. It's showing up more and more in HD camcorders. You most often see it in hard drive- and flash-based camcorders.

While manufacturers appear to be embracing AVCHD, software has lagged behind. There are few options for editing and burning AVCHD content. You can do it, but you'll probably have to pay.

On top of that, AVCHD is intended to be a high-definition format. It's supposed to be burned to HD media (Blu-ray). It can be burned to a regular DVD. But it's still in the HD format. It needs to be played in a compatible player. That usually means Blu-ray players.

You want the DVD to play in a standard DVD player. That means converting AVCHD into another format. The standard format for DVDs is MPEG-2. This is a standard-definition format. So, it won't be HD. But it should work.

I can find a few programs to edit AVCHD. Just click here.
