Which discs do Blu-ray players take?

QI am confused. What type of discs do Blu-ray Disc players take? Will they play my regular DVDs? What about my music CDs?

ANew formats guarantee some confusion. So, you're not the only one scratching your head.

You may also be thinking of the transition from VHS to DVD. You obviously couldn't play your VHS tapes in a DVD player. So, you had to buy your movie library all over again.

Blu-ray has superseded the DVD format. It's the way to store and play high-definition content. For a time, Blu-ray battled HD DVD for supremacy. But Blu-ray came out on top.

Blu-ray discs look identical to DVDs and CDs. But much more data can be stored on the disc. Blu-ray players use a blue laser to read the disc. It has a shorter wavelength than the DVD player's red laser. This shorter wavelength allows it to read more densely packed data.

The Blu-ray Disc Association sets standards for Blu-ray players. It doesn't require players to be backwards compatible with DVDs and CDs. But the association does recommend backwards compatibility.

Can she play her DVDs and CDs? Click here; I'll tell you all about it.

Thankfully, Blu-ray player manufacturers are following the recommendation. All current Blu-ray players can play DVDs and CDs. So, there's no need to replace your movie collection just yet.

Besides, your DVD collection will look better on a Blu-ray player. It will enhance the picture quality from your DVDs. This is called upconverting. You won't get an HD-quality picture. But it will look noticeably nicer.

You may also be able to watch your home movies. Many players also support recordable DVDs. The same goes for your burned music CDs. Most can also read photos off of CDs. So, most of your current media will work fine.

Finding a Blu-ray player isn't difficult. You can get them online and at big-box stores. Prices range from around $250 to more than $1000. While price will be a factor, player profiles also matter. I have a guide to choosing the right profile.

You might also consider purchasing a PlayStation 3. It can play Blu-ray discs. Plus, the player can be upgraded over the Internet. So, it always has the latest player profile. And it's priced on par with other Blu-ray players. My guide to video game consoles has more information.
