Scanning large materials isn't simple

I was cleaning out my attic, and found some cool stuff. There were boxes of documents, drawings and scrapbooks. They must have been stored there by family members. I'd like to scan and share them. But many don't fit in my scanner. What can I do?

Scanners are great for digitizing documents and photos. You can get all that real-world material into your computer. But not everything fits in a scanner.

Maybe it's documents or drawings on large pieces of paper. Maybe you just want to scan the family scrapbook. In your case, it's both. There are plenty of materials that exceed the standard 8.5"x11" paper size.

Unfortunately, most scanners only have a scanning area of around 8.5"x11". You could scan larger material in sections. And then piece them together in your computer. You'd use photo-editing software like IrfanView or GIMP.

But this isn't a very elegant solution. And the final results may not be great. Your next option is to look for a large format scanner.

You should be able to find scanners that take A3 size paper. A3 paper measures around 11.7"x17". I know of several scanners that accommodate this size. But they're expensive. Only one comes in under $1,000.

That is the Mustek A3 USB 1200 Pro, which goes for about $200. But the resolution is mediocre. You won't get high-quality scans.

That may not matter to you. But if it does, you'll need to look to pricier models. Check out the Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL ($1,400), Epson GT-20000 ($1,500) or Ricoh IS300e ($1,950). All of these will produce high-quality scans.

Also consider color depth. A scanner should offer at least 24-bit color. This is true color - it allows 16.7 million colors. Scanners often offer 48-bit color. You won't notice a difference when printing scans. But you'll have more photo-editing options with 48-bit color.

Most of the large-format scanners I saw were 48-bit. They also had high resolutions. So you'll probably be okay with any of them.

These scanners are not a common household item. I seriously doubt that you can find them in a store. You'll probably need to shop online.

Manage your photos on a cruise

Soon I'll be going on a two-week cruise. I have a digital camera with a 1GB memory card. How can I offload my pictures while at sea? I want to be able to fill the card several times.

You have several options for managing your photos. The easiest would be to get extra memory cards. As you fill them, just stick in new ones. When you get home you can download all of your photos.

Most digital cameras use either Memory Stick or SD memory cards. Extra memory cards are cheap. You can easily find a 1GB card for under $10. You can get a 4GB card for around $20. Some cameras can take higher capacity cards. These can range from around $50 to $100. And they can hold as much as 16GBs.

I'd recommend extra memory cards. It's such a cheap and easy solution. But it's not the only one.

You could get a handheld photo storage device. These devices are about the size of an iPod. You'll find models that store between 30GB and 250GB. They can pull the photos right off your memory card.

Several companies make these devices. Try Epson, Jobo or Wolverine. For devices without a screen, prices start around $150. You'll spend upward of $500 for one with a screen.

It's no secret: Spam is out of control. Unsolicited messages far outnumber legitimate ones.

Spam drains productivity and threatens your computer's security. Who has time for that?

Now, unknown cybercrooks aren't the only progenitors of spam.

There's something I like to call "friendly" spam. These are the jokes and hoax messages forwarded by friends and family.

Although people mean well, these messages can be irritating. They clearly violate e-mail etiquette.

Maybe you don't know how to speak to your friends and family about the messages. In that case, visit StopForwarding.Us.

It will send an anonymous e-mail to the sender of these messages. Hopefully, the person will heed the advice in the e-mail.

Once you're done, I suggest you read up on e-mail etiquette. After all, you may be showing bad e-mail manners without even realizing it! There are handy tips on the site.

IPHONE POWER ADAPTERS SHOCKINGLY DANGEROUS
USB power adapters that come with the new iPhone 3G could hurt you. Apple warned this week that the prongs could snap off. Were that to happen, the user could receive a shock.

Countries affected are the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico and several Latin American nations. Apple said the adapters should not be used until they are replaced. New adapters will be available on Oct. 10. You can order a replacement via the Web. Replacements will also be available at Apple stores.

Apple said no injuries had been reported. It has pictures of the power adapters on its site.

CAUTION: INTERNET EXPLORER 8 IS STILL BETA
Jan wrote me from Lincoln, NE. She had downloaded Internet Explorer 8, which is still in beta. That means it is still being developed. Jan agrees that that is certainly the case!

She says her computer is all fouled up. Her home page is inaccessible; when she tries to go there, the computer crashes. IE won't let her report the errors to Microsoft. Also, the delete key refuses to work.

Jan, I did some checking on the Internet. Many people are apparently having problems with IE8. But I did find some solutions.

If you're using Windows XP, click Start>>Control Panel. Double-click Add or Remove Programs. Find Internet Explorer 8 and click it. Click Remove.

IE8 is considered an update in Windows Vista, rather than a program. To delete it, go to Control Panel. Double-click Programs and Features. In the left panel, click "View installed updates." Select Windows Internet Explorer 8. Click Uninstall.

You also could use System Restore. This rolls back Windows' system files. To find System Restore, click Start>>All Programs>> Accessories>> System Tools>>System Restore. A restore point should have been created when you downloaded IE8. Use that restore point to go back. Can't remember when you downloaded IE8? Pick a date you're sure was earlier than the download.

Just a final note, Jan. Beta programs are usually rough. Personally, I already have enough problems. So I don't download beta programs. I recommend others avoid them, too, unless they just love hassles.

A ROCKET-POWERED COMPUTER
Tom wrote from Larned, KS. He reported that he needs a new computer. It should boot fast, load programs fast, compile video fast. In other words, he feels the need for speed!

Tom, you and I think alike. I can't stand to wait for a computer. I want Word to open NOW. I want my browser to load YESTERDAY. I want to see Windows shuckin' and cookin'.

So, there are some obvious things you need. Make sure you have a first-rate chip. The absolute best is usually too costly. It's OK to come down a step or two. Intel's absolute best for consumers is its Extreme line. I'd skip that. You need a regular Core 2 Quad. The best AMD chip is the Phenom. Get the triple core, rather than the quad. Very few programs can use more than one core.

Be sure your new motherboard can handle 64-bit computing. If the salesman seems uninformed, check the computer manufacturer's Web site. And be sure that the Windows version is 64-bit. To confirm that, click Start>>Control Panel. Double-click System. Look in the System section.

You can install gobs of memory. I wouldn't go overboard. Four gigabytes should be enough. Be sure the computer can take that much. The manufacturer's site can help with this, too.

You're probably not going to see a consumer box with a solid-state drive. Such a drive could very well be faster than a conventional drive. But solid state drives are expensive and small. I'd go for a serial ATA drive with at least 500-gigabyte capacity. Terabyte drives also are available. I've seen them advertised at less than $200 online. Buy a drive that runs at 7200 rpm.

Finally, I'd pop for a 512MB video card. And I'd use two monitors. Windows handles dual monitors with aplomb.

You may be tempted to use a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks) setup. Level 0 (striping) is supposed to speed up the computer. That hasn't been my experience. I think RAID setups just introduce complexity. Don't go there.

You're all set, Tom. Don't get a speeding ticket!

What would you lose if your e-mail were hacked? Your personal messages and contacts would be compromised. And your messages could include personal photos or financial details.

Recently, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's e-mail account was hacked. The contents were posted on the Internet for the world to see.

Apparently, a complete stranger did the hacking. That's how easy it is to hack an e-mail account. Let this be a lesson.

With Webmail, your user ID is generally a part of your e-mail address. Anyone who receives an e-mail from you knows your user ID. An investigation into Palin's e-mail usage made her address public knowledge. So, the hacker only needed her password.

Did the hacker guess her password? No. The hacker created a new one using Yahoo's password reset feature. It's actually pretty easy to do.

To reset the password, the hacker answered a security question. That, too, was gleaned from public information.

Fran sent an e-mail this week, asking about online banks. She had the bank personnel call her. They wanted her Social Security number, age, driver's license number and her mother's maiden name, among other things.

She was uncomfortable giving them that information. So she canceled the arrangement. She wondered afterwards if she had been over-cautious.

This sounds like the type of information a bank would need, Fran. If you're sure you're talking to the bank, I wouldn't see a problem.

The problem arises when we get an e-mail asking for this data. We can be shuttled to a site that looks legitimate. But it isn't. You enter your confidential data, and kiss your money goodbye!

There's a crucial difference between the two situations. One you initiated; the other arrived uninvited. I'd feel comfortable with the one you initiated.

Why would someone use an online-only bank? Generally, they pay higher interest on CDs. They say they can do that because their costs are lower. After all, they don't have brick and mortar branches to worry about. Personally, I think they use higher rates to attract business. Why? Because they don't have brick and mortar branches!

One of the largest online banks, Netbank, failed last year. Web banks were badly hurt when mainstream banks went online. Early Internet banks did not have local ATM machines. So, patrons of Internet banks had to mail in deposits. Web banks usually dispensed cash through arrangements with local banks.

Besides high interest, their main drawing card was online bill paying. When the big guys went online, they still offered local service. And they had online bill paying. The Internet banks were left with one good weapon—higher interest rates.

Fran, if you're comfortable using an online bank, answer their questions. Just be sure that you initiate the conversation.

FIREFOX PATCHES SEVERAL FAULTS
Firefox issued five patches this week. Two fixed critical flaws, according to the Firefox people. Those two could have been used to hack into others' computers.

Firefox users should have found the new software on their computers. When it pops up, give it permission to install. The fix will bring you up to version 3.0.2.

It is possible that you won't get the upgrade. I know that because I didn't get mine. You can download version 3.0.2.

Mozilla, Firefox's parent, has more information on the bugs.

I bought a computer with Windows Vista. This thing is really slow. My XP computer, which was old, was faster than this. What can I do? I feel like I made a big mistake.

There are plenty of gripes around about Vista's speed. I was reading an Internet test this morning. It showed that Apple's OS X Leopard is significantly faster. Our iMac does seem to boot faster.

We've been running Vista since January 2007. It has worked fine. Its reliability and speed are comparable to Leopard, other than booting.

I recall complaints about other Windows versions, when they were new. Always, the older one was better, faster, more reliable, blah, blah, blah.

You might have a lemon machine. Or, maybe it's not configured properly. Let's try to fix it. If it's still not right, take it back. (I hope you haven't been sitting on this problem for six months!)

Since yours is a new machine, your registry should be OK. I wouldn't worry about cleaning it.

You could also double-check the programs starting with Windows. These days, almost all of them do, or want to. The list is in the System Configuration file. That could slow your start-up.

Only people who are confident of their abilities should edit this file. Mistakes could destabilize your computer.

With that happy thought in mind, click Start. In the search box, enter the word run. In the box that opens, enter "msconfig" (without the quotes). The System Configuration window will open. Select the Startup tab. Most of the things listed there are not critical. Leave any security programs checked. Clear the boxes of everything else. Click OK.

You'll probably find you need some programs starting with Windows. Add them back as you find problems.

However, I'd bet that your speed problem is related to memory. Vista needs a bunch. But sometimes people stint on memory, or they just don't know.

You need 1 gigabyte of RAM for Vista to run decently. This could very well be your problem. I recommend 2GB just to be certain, assuming you've got the bucks. If you have a video card, it needs 128MB of RAM. Again, double that to be certain.

Checking your RAM is easy enough. Click Start>>Control Panel. Double-click System. You'll find your system memory under System. How about that video memory? Right-click an unused area of the desktop. Click Properties. Click Display Settings. Click Advanced Settings. Look on the Adapter tab. Find dedicated video memory. Mine shows 256MB.

Finally, if money is tight, you can turn off the Aero look. That will free up some memory. Find a free area on your desktop. Right-click and select Personalize. Click Window Color and Appearance. Click "Open classic appearance properties for more color options." Under "Color scheme," select Windows Vista Basic. Click OK.

Of course, you may have bought a Vista box for the look. Without Aero, you're back to Windows XP, appearance-wise. If you can't make this machine work, take it back. Try another brand.

If you decide to return it, back up your data first. There are a number of ways to do that. I swear by Carbonite, one of my advertisers. It takes your data offsite, so it's always protected. You can try it free. They don't even take your credit card number. Also, check this tip on online backup safety.

A LITTLE COUNTRIFIED HUMOR
In the country lived a family that made its living weaving cloth. One day, a debt collector knocked on the door. "Is Jack home?" he asked the woman who answered the door. "I'm sorry," the woman replied. "Jack's gone for cotton." A few weeks later the collector tried again. "Is Jack here today?" Once again the answer was "No, sir, I'm afraid he has gone for cotton." When he returned for the third time and Jack was still nowhere to be seen, he complained, "I suppose Jack is gone for cotton again?" "No," the woman answered solemnly, "Jack died yesterday." Suspicious that he was being avoided, the collector decided to wait a week and investigate the cemetery. Sure enough, he found poor Jack's tombstone, with this inscription: "Gone, But Not for Cotton."

Now, that was sad!

Entry-level digital cameras

I want to get my first digital camera. But the prices and features are just overwhelming. I have no idea what is right for me. I'd like to get a camera for under $200. But I don't want something that's inept, or just going to break. Can you help me?

Jumping into the digital camera market can be intimidating. There is a vast variety of cameras on store shelves. It's hard to know where to begin.

There are plenty of digital cameras for beginners. These also work great for those who just want to take snapshots. These users don't need expensive, feature-rich cameras.

A quality point-and-shot is more than enough for most people. As the name suggests, you just aim the camera and press a button. These cameras are slim enough to drop in a pocket. They're great for frequent travelers.

These cameras can automatically adjust their settings. They can focus and correct for light conditions on their own. Plus, you get a flash for those nighttime shots.

Lots of cameras under $200

You can easily find a point-and-shoot for under $200. Budget-minded shoppers can go far below that price.

As you say, features can be overwhelming. Most are not terribly important to the casual shooter. For instance, I would give no weight to digital zoom. If a picture is blown up enough, gaps can fall between pixels. Digital zoom guesses what pixels to add. The result often is not pretty.

Optical zoom, on the other hand, is very important. Using it does not degrade the picture. Most inexpensive cameras have 3X or 4X optical zooms. That means you can blow up the subject 3 or 4 times. I'm sure you already guessed that. Anyway, give some weight to optical zooms. They're very handy.

The megapixel question

We might as well get the megapixel question out of the way. Early cameras had maybe one megapixel. They could take a decent 4-inch by 6-inch picture. Blow up those pictures and you'd get jaggies or noise.

Most cheap cameras today fall into the 5- to 8-megapixel range. You might run into trouble with them if you really enlarged a picture. But for casual shooters, they are more than enough. Really, megapixels are no longer an issue.

One other thing to consider is reliability. According to Consumer Reports, the most reliable brands are Panasonic, Sony, Olympus, Kodak and Canon.
